There is an appealing background to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just over the dividing line from next door Thailand, in which casino betting is not legal. Eight gambling dens are anchored in a generally tiny area in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime area, a three to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The astonishing income accrued from the casinos ranges from 7.5 million dollars to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few controls requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is assumed to be largely Thai; although, investment sources are vague. The borders are ceremoniously open from 09:00 to 1700, and although visas are supposedly needed to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is true of many border crossings.

The original Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only 1 gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary boat casino, highlights one hundred and fifty slot machine games and 60 tables. The Naga river boat never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The 1st casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly opened. There are one hundred and fifty slots and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machine games and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slots and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and 96 table games, including eighty seven baccarat banque (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and sixty six of the normal tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international vacation and hotel building that contains numerous luxuries on top of the gambling hall, which contains ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and 88 gaming tables.
